Corruption Scandal Erodes Marcos’ Standing Among Filipinos

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s trust rating fell as a corruption scandal unfolded last month, showing how the probe he set in motion is hitting his popularity.

Marcos’ trust ratings declined to +7 in September from +18 in June, according to a Social Weather Stations survey commissioned by Stratbase Consultancy. The poll asked 1,500 adults nationwide in late-September.

The president in July exposed corruption in flood-control projects, and congressional hearings in the past weeks revealed allegations of collusion among lawmakers, public works officials and contractors to divert billions of government funds meant for those projects. The scandal has triggered protestsdimmed economic outlook and sapped investor sentiment in the Southeast Asian nation.
